Removing Suffering and Giving Joy

The Daishonin Took the Sufferings
of All Living Beings As His Own

There is a "self-centered" part of us that is constantly functioning-thinking first of ourselves, and then of others only when necessary.

This is not necessarily a bad thing; it’s an important part of being alive. When self-interest becomes the dominant force in our lives, however, it can cause us to act insensitively and even harmfully toward others. It has the potential to make us selfish and, if unchecked, even criminal.
On the one had there are times, especially in emergencies, when failure to look out for ourselves may have catastrophic results. While we all have to solve our own problems, there are some proems that we cannot solve alone. We must rely on the help of others.

On the other hand there are times when, by extending a hand to others, we can help them in ways that they may not be able to help themselves. What is needed in such situations is compassion.

In Chinese and Japanese Buddhist texts, including Nichiren Daishonin’s writings, the word for compassion comprises two Chinese characters. It is pronounced ci bei in Chinese and jihi in Japanese. The first character, ci or ji, is a translation of the Sanskrit work maitri, meaning "to give happiness." The second, bei or hi, comes from the Sanskrit karuna, meaning "to remove suffering." Taken together they describe the function of relieving living beings of suffering and giving them happiness.

Almost anyone can feel kindness toward someone who shows them kindness. It is the spirit of Buddhism to develop a sense of compassion toward all people--toward any person. It is in this spirit that Nichiren Daishonin wrote: "The various sufferings experienced by all livings beings are without exception Nichiren’s own sufferings" (GZ 758).

The Behavior of a Bodhisattva

The compassion of Buddhist enlightenment--the desire to "remove suffering and give happiness"--is expressed in the human behavior of a Buddha or bodhisattva. Nichiren Daishonin also writes, "Even a heartless villain loves his wife and children. He too has a portion of the bodhisattva world within him." (WND, 358).

This statement makes it clear that anyone and everyone possesses the potential of a bodhisattva--the potential to behave with compassion toward another person. Yet, it is an ordinary human tendency to place concern for ourselves first and foremost. This may be the strongest human impulse. Furthermore, there long have been those who hold the view that compassion is a sign of weakness; that generosity only spoils the receiver of kindness.

There may be a grain of truth to his assertion. Kindness that does not empower the receiver creates little lasting value. From the Buddhist view, true compassion is that which has the power to root out the cause of misery in people's lives and direct them to the cause of happiness. Such compassion by its very nature requires courage and strength.

How then can ordinary people, who are governed by the impulse for self-interest, express compassion in a constructive and meaningful way?

A natural example is the actions of a mother toward her child. A mother will do anything she can to protect her child, even if it means braving flames or flood.

The Kindness of a Parent

Nichiren Daishonin wrote, "I, Nichiren Daishonin, am sovereign, teacher, and father and mother to all the people of Japan" (WND, 287). He made this statement to convey his state of life as the original Buddha--a state of life capable of embracing all people with the compassion of a parent toward his or her children.

Now this is not an easy thing. We sometimes even lose patience with our own children, let alone strangers. Since that is the case, most of us without assistance tend to be lacking in the quality defined as Buddhist compassion.

What can we do about it? Well, to state the conclusion first, we can expose our hearts and minds to the very state of compassion manifested by the Buddha. When we believe in and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the Gohonzon, which embodies the compassionate state of life of the original Buddha, we stimulate and bring forth a source of boundless compassion latent within us.
Taking a lesson form the Daishonin’s writings, it is also useful to apply the model of a parent--or teacher--in developing compassion for others.

Any successful parent or teacher knows the importance of seeing things from the child’s perspective. The exert themselves in caring for and educating their children, wanting to see them grow and develop their humanity.

Such people transcend divisions of self and other to view the sufferings and joys of their children or students as their own. Constant is their concern for the children. Always thinking of them, they are eager to offer help. Protection, and an opportunity to learn. This sort of concern will certainly reach the hearts of others, be they children or adults. The Nobel-prize winning French author André Gide (1869-1951) put it clearly: "True kindness presupposes the faculty of imagining as one’s own the suffering and joys of others" (Pretexts, "Portraits and Aphorisms" [1903]).

Compassion also includes the ability to recognize in others strengths and capacities that we ourselves may be lacking, and our wish to learn from those qualities. While it is easy to identify another’s weak points, it is harder than we may think to clearly recognize and appreciate the person’s strong points. If we focus on the strong points, however, we will naturally come to appreciate, fell close to, and even develop a fondness for him or her. As a result, we may find ourselves thinking of that person more often and feeling concerned about his or her well-being.
We practice Buddhism for our own happiness and that of others. These two aims of faith cannot be separated. When our thoughts for others’ well-being become part of our daily prayer, we transcend the innate impulse to be concerned only with ourselves, and illuminate the fundamental ignorance that is the source of suffering with the light of our innate Buddhahood.

The Boar type is usually an honest, straightforward and patient (minsan) person. They are a modest, shy character who prefers to work quietly behind the scenes (FD is that you?). Last night, March 26, 2006, was the night for Artistang Artlet's 25th Anniversary Production.. It was held for the first time outside of UST (where our plays were not allowed to be shown).. PETA Theater Center was the chosen venue for this production.. Though the audience we expected were more than who came, still it was a success.. The almost 2 month preparation of each individual both members and alumi paid off.. I'm proud to be part of Artistang Artlets, I'm proud to have been part of this Anniversary Production.. Though I have experienced a lot of problem regarding this production, I still am proud to say, "I did it!"..

The following are the synopsis of the ORIGINAL PLAYS done by AA:

"JEWEL at ANG KANYANG DALAWANG.."

Jewel is average gay guy who fell in love for the first time with his classmate Edward. Although they are good friends, Jewel is yet to tell his heartthrob friend about his inner feeling for his classmate. But his decision is weighed by two of his conscience: one prodding Jewel into the relationship while the other implicating Edward as a user who would take advantage of Jewel’s niceties. Jewel decided to follow his feeling and tell Edward, but ends up embarrassed and ashamed. And as he tries to kill himself, he was saved by a mysterious phone call. Years passed, Jewel and Edward had gone their separate ways. But Jewel has been hounded by Edward to which the gay guy doesn’t entertain. However, a sudden realization wakes Jewel and was able to look into Edward’s feelings. Now, Jewel has to make up for lost time, to tell Edward about how he feels for his friend. But at what cost?

Brokeback Fever

My girlfriends and I watched Brokeback Mountain last Thursday at Gateway Mall in Cubao..
We were like 2 mins late..
I dunno if the scene I saw was the start of the movie..
Still, I didn't mind it..

Why did I watch Brokeback?
1st because of the publicity of the movie..
2nd because I'm gay..
3rd because I have a crush on Jake..

I was really touched by the movie..
Some scenes really somehow happened to me..
It also made me realize about what has been happening in my life..
But I didn't cry while watching it..

One thing not evident in the movie though is their love for each other..
I don't know if it is implied that they were in love..
All I know is they like to spend time together in the mountains to fuck..
Maybe I'm wrong..

my family and I went to 168 mall..!! hay.. suking-suki na ako ng 168.. reyna ata ako nun?! dyan ko lagi buy mga bags ko.. yup, MGA bags.. meaning madami na.. madami me bags from 168 kasi, ilang gamitan lang, sira na agad..!! sino ba naman ang hindi mapapabili ulit.. pero at least, iba-iba ang bag ko..!! hehehe.. pero kahit ganun, I keep coming back to 168.. ang saya lang mamili-mili dun.. for xmas, I bought shirts, wallet and you guessed it right, bag..!! yun lang naman mabibili mo for "guys" eh.. ayoko pa naman bumuy ng pants dun.. wit ko feel.. pag babae ka, maloka ka sa dami mong mabibili.. buti di masyadong siksikan sa mall.. kumonti na ang mga taong namimili.. at may nabalitaan akong gustong umeksena ah.. gustong agawin ang korona ko.. ayan siya sa picture.. gaga!! hindi yang mga chinese na yan.. yun yung naka-ternong green.. kalowka.. pupunta ng 168 ng nakaterno.. very Filipino.. and nag-iisang fashion icon - IMELDA!!! (pictures were not taken during the same day.. nakuha ko lang siya sa net.. tsaka ayoko siyang makasabay..!!) pansinin nyo ang mga katabi ng lola mo, sa bang direksyon nakatingin at hindi kay Imelda.. sino kaya ang isa pang dumating? balita ko madami daw bags.. hahaha..!!

then, we're off to Ongpin para maglunch/merienda.. 4pm kasi kami natapos sa 168 eh.. we ate peking duck, siomai, and tofu.. yumyum..!! tapos like what most people do in Ongpin, maglakad-lakad.. hindi bagay dun ang magcar kasi siksikan.. lalo na pag-Chinese New Year.. good luck sa sikip.. we bought some fudang na ihahanda sa noche buena.. then uwi na kami.. dumaan kami sa may Luneta.. at napansin namin na super dami ng tao.. " May rally ba," I asked myself.. Hindi pala.. Kaya pala madaming tao dahil today ang Parade of Stars.. sabi nila mudang park daw kami muna sa may kalye and wait for the floats.. 1st float, "Tatlong Baraha." Compared to lugaw, may itsura pala si Mark Lapid ah.. Yep, Mark Lapid our famous "SAGIIINNNGGG!!" guy.. Kumpleto talaga ang Lapid clan.. Ultimo si Jess Lapid nandun.. Sayang kompleto na sana sila kung nandun si R.Lapids! Chos!!

eto talaga ang highlight ng aking blog.. ang susunod na float.. "Super Noypi".. I saw Katrina Halili (maganda siya ah.. maliit lang fez nya!), Sandara Park din ang ganda.. John Prats panalo (crush ng kapatid ko)... si Polo naman hottie (crush ni mudang).. at xempre dahil nandun si Mark Herras..!! naka white t-shirt siya.. tapos nakasuot siya ng glowing devil headband.. at red ang ibang parts ng hairlalou niya.. water na water na me when I saw him.. he's hot.. hotter than hell..!! kapatid ko and mudang ko eh todo sigaw.. eh ikaw, walang magawa.. ang drama ko sa mga moment na yun ay dead ma.. KJ ang image ko.. kunyari I'm not enjoying the parade.. bakit naman kamo? katabi ko si pudang..!! aber sige nga, anong gagawin ko? binubuhos ko na lang ang pagnanasa ko kay Mark sa aking mga isip.. sa isip na lang me magwawater.. sa isip nalang me magfifinger (ay ang bastos!!).. che..!!

nasan kamo ang ibang float? WALA ng sumunod..!! balita ko na lang sa radio, wit na sila.. nasiraan..!! nakakaloka..!! kawawa yung mga libo-libong tawowo sa kahabaan ng Roxas Blvd.. so, sa January na lang sila ulit bumalik.. wawa talaga..

got home.. nagbalot ng ibang gifts.. pinamigay sa tito, tita, pinsan.. binigyan din nila me.. nag-games ang mga bata.. P20.00 ang prize.. umuwi ulit ng bahay.. kumain ng steak, liempo, lasagna, and my favorite -- 3 layers of HAM and MAYONNAISE..!!

ANIMAL KA!!

wala siguro akong maisip na ibang topic kaya I wanna talk about animals I adore.. 3 animals lang naman talaga ang gusto ko.. sayang lang that you can not keep them as pets.. except for the dog.. pero I can not afford it pa ngayon.. xempre, wala pang work..

pero hindi naman talaga ako animal lover.. pero hindi yung tipong "I wanna go the zoo everyday" ang drama ko.. i just find them cute.. and cuddly..

The panda bear. Ang cute.. Eto yung mga tipong stuffed toy na actual.. Sarap yakap-yakapin.. Hay panda.. Hello Panda (sarap yun!).. Hehehe.. Chow Chow. Double cute!! Kain na tayo.. Hehehe.. Unang kita ko pa lang dito sa pet shop, gusto ko na siya..!! Someday, bibili me ng isa.. Dolphin. The closest I could get to a sea animal is siguro with a dolphin.. We are not talking about gold fishes here ah, or yung mga nalalafang na isda, crustaceans etc.. My first with encounter dito was sa Ocean Park sa HK.. diba ang saya, kung may pool ka sa house taposmay dolphin? ANG TARAY!!

Another thing, I am scared of snakes.. I fear the sight of snakes.. kahit sa pictures, tignan mo nga dito ni picture hindi ako naglagay.. kahit sa tv pa yan (nagfrefreeze talaga ko when I see snakes!).. or kahit sa encyclopedia pa yan (when I read the encyclopedia, I skipped the Sn parts of it).. I watched King Cobra (kasi bday ng friend ko at gusto nya yun!) and Anaconda.. eto ang catch.. NAKAPIKIT AKO..!!! diba sosyal? pero hindi ko talaga alam when did this fear started.. I can not recall kung nakakita na ba talaga ako ng ahas in real life ah nung bata pa ako.. ggr..
